In 2018 the music world will celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of the American composer Leonard Bernstein. A brilliant opportunity dedicated to Sistema-Inspired projects will be to perform a special arrangement of “Somewhere” from “West Side Story.” Thanks to Bernstein’s daughter Jamie, as well as other collaborating institutions, young musicians from Sistema programs worldwide can include the arrangement in their repertoire, and perform it at concerts, both in the respective programs and for joint events. The initiative will culminate during the SEYO Summer Residency of the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra planned at the end of August in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Parts will be provided as physical copies — they WILL NOT be available online — and can be reserved only through the promoting organization. Jamie describes them as “…Sistema-friendly ‘tiered’ arrangements: in this case, two parts for every instrument, one for beginners, the other for more advanced young musicians.”
There are three different instrumental arrangements available:
• Full orchestra
In addition, there is a Choir and Piano arrangement that can stand alone, and is compatible with any of the instrumental arrangements (i.e. a chorus could join a winds/brass/percussion ensemble). But also, any instrumental ensemble can perform its own arrangement independently. For the string orchestra and full orchestra, we will provide string parts of 22.214.171.124.2, (4 first violins, 4 second violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, and 2 double bass); and for every other part in the band and orchestra arrangements, we will provide 2 copies each per instrument.
